Special (2006) - dir. Hal Haberman & Jeremy Passmore
An excellent take on superhero films. Les (Michael Rapaport) is a depressed, lonely, lowly individual, who signs up for an experimental drug. Somewhere between his depression and the complex chemical makeup of his brain the drug has some adverse side effects. It’s a charming independent film with a uniqueness that’s hard to define. Somewhere between Jarmusch’s quirky black comedies and some of the best ideas you’ve ever heard from a stoned out friend.
Rapaport has always been an under-appreciated actor, in my opinion. So to see him as a protagonist in a quirky indie drama was a treat for me. And he delivers. It’s definitely low budget, but it was done in such a way where a larger budget may have lowered the film’s value. A gem.
